FSSAI registration or license numbers are a series of 14 digits that are required to obtain by every food business operation. This registration number bear the license details of the manufacturer and the format of the registration number read as:
  • The first digit indicates the status of the manufacturer whether he is a license holder or simply registered

  • The following two digits represent the year of FSSAI registration or license
  • The next three digits disclosed the registering or licensing authority
  • The remaining six digits are the registration or license number of the manufacturer

FSSAI registration is not limited to food manufacturers only. It is suitable for all small operators who manufacture, distribute or store food. Keeping that insight, even restaurant owners and street food vendors come under the scope of FSSAI registration.

FSSAI refers to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India which was founded to enhance the hygiene and quality of the food. On the other hand, FDA works to ensure the safety of the food as well as medical products. So, both work for the same cause and FDA is a helping hand of FSSAI.

Any business activity dealing with food needs to get an FSSAI registration. The core objective of having this registration is to ensure the food served to the masses is hygienic and clean.

FSSAI registration/ license (state and a central license) issued by the FSSAI authority come with a validity of a minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 5 years and requires renewal within 30 days from the date of expiry.

  • FSSAI registration is required for the small food business operators with maximum annual turnover of Rs.12 lakhs.

If the renewal of FSSAI registration or license has not been applied even beyond the 30 days of the registration, then the registration will expire and would need to be filed as a fresh application.

In the case of multiple warehouses, provided all warehouses are in the same campus address, once license will suffice. However, in the case of different locations, even if in the same city, a business would require separate licenses for each of the warehouses.
